This weekend's wet weather meant busy switchboards for the police and emergency services. On Saturday the heavy downpours brought new images of flooded roads and basements, with traffic flow on other roads in the province being complicated by falling rocks or trees.
The worst hit areas were the Costa del Sol and the Guadalhorce valley, however the entire province was not without effects of the weekend's downpours.
The majority of emergency calls were made from Mijas, Fuengirola and Alhaurín de la Torre. By Saturday lunchtime some 149 litres of water per square metre had fallen in Mijas, at that point the greatest volume in the province. Water had to be pumped out of Dunnes Stores and the emergency services were called out to help rescue drivers from cars trapped on flooded roads: five at the Islas Marianas roundabout and others on the Alhaurín road.
The fire brigade closed a flooded Camino Viejo de Coín twice on Saturday. In Fuengirola business premises on the seafront were flooded as was the ground floor of the police station, among other incidents.
A driver had to be rescued from a vehicle in the Santa Amalia area of Alhaurín de la Torre and there were reports of leaks at the provincial prison.
