Summer comes early to the Costa del Sol
Locals and tourists alike flocked to the beach at the weekend to take full advantage of the early summer temperatures that have arrived at the Costa del Sol. “It’s just like summer”, were the words on many people’s lips, with temperatures averaging 26 degrees. The good weather was especially welcome after the recent week of heavy rainfall which struck the city, causing flooding and affecting flights coming into Malaga.
The main beaches were packed out and among the sun beds, towels, waves and sand, on the paseos maritimos the Chiringuitos (beach bars) were crammed full, so much so that on Sunday, Chiringuito Tropicana at Malagueta beach was booked up all day until 5pm.
The good weather couldn’t have come at a better time for bathers in Marbella and San Pedro, coinciding with the end of work to the main beaches. The work was implemented by authorities last week in an effort to prepare the sea front promenade for the start of tourist season.
The work, carried out by the Coastal Authority and in coordination with the Town Hall, involved rebuilding parts of the beaches and cleaning the sand. A stretch of 2.5 kilometres was regenerated between El Faro and La Fontanilla.
In San Pedro efforts have been focused on removing pebbles that torment the soles of strollers in Marbella, and work has involved the transfer of 13,000 cubic metres of sand. The town now faces the last phase of adaptation of the beaches which will involve pebbles being moved by machines from the shore to the top of the coast, so that the sand is as clean as possible.source surinenglish
