Another annual event to coincide with the travel market is the SUR in English dinner, celebrated in London as a tribute to the tourism industry as a whole. This year nearly 150 guests, including representatives of the tourism industry on national, regional and local levels, gathered at the Fishmongers’ Hall on the banks of the Thames.
Among them was the Andalusian minister for Tourism, Francisco Javier Fernández, and the secretary of state for Tourism, Isabel Borrego, as well as the director general of Turespaña, Marta Blanco, and the executive director of the World Tourism Organisation, Carlos Vogeler. Representing the provincial tourist authority was its president Elías Bendodo, who was joined by numerous mayors from Malaga’s tourist destinations including Malaga, Marbella, Benalmádena, Mijas and Torrox, among others.
The authorities and SUR directors spoke of the importance of the British market for the industry, stressing the good forecasts for the coming seasons. The experts also pointed out, however, that the industry had to work hard to keep up the quality offered to its visitors.
Special tribute was paid to this newspaper’s consultant editor, Liz Parry, in recognition of her contribution to tourism through SUR in English. Liz, along with SUR’s director of publications, Pedro Luis Gómez, has been attending the World Travel Market with SUR in English for the last 32 years to support the industry.source surinenglish
