A new 3.5 kilometre section of road has finally provded a link between Genalguacil in the Serranía de Ronda and the Costa del Sol after a 40-year wait.

The short stretch of the MA-8302, linking the village in the Valle del Genal to the Peñas Blancas pass on the Sierra Bermeja, was the last stretch of the province's numbered road system that was still a dirt road. The new surface has reduced the journey time to Estepona to about half an hour.

The link has cost the Diputación provincial authority 1.2 million euros and has a viewpoint and pedestrian pathway for some of its length.

Local communities in the Valle del Genal area have been campaigning for the road surfacing to help boost local tourism. Mayor of Genalguacil, Miguel Ángel Herrera, called it "the road of hope" at its official opening last week.source surinenglish
