Brexit process to be triggered next week

British Prime Minister Theresa May will invoke Article 50 on Wednesday 29 March, Downing Street has confirmed.

The news comes after the UK's ambassador to the European Union, Sir Tim Barrow, notified Donald Tusk and the rest of the European Council on Monday morning of the date that Britain will trigger the Brexit process.

The step on Wednesday next week will involve officially informing the other 27 member states through a letter to the European Council that the UK is leaving the EU.

Only after the letter has been received does Article 50 allow for discussions on the actual exit and future relations between Britain and the European Union to commence. It is on these negotations, which are expected to last around two years, that the status of British residents in Spain depends.

If everything follows the timetable set out by the EU law, Brexit should happen in March 2019.source surinenglish
