The Lions Club was founded on June 7th, 1917. It now has 1.4 million members in more than 46,000 clubs across over 200 countries.
To celebrate the Centennial, Mijas La Cala Lions Club recently announced a special project at a tapas party in the local Casa de Cultura.
Anita Humphreys, the Lions press officer, said that the club had decided to dedicate this year to the young people in the town by supporting the schools with essential needs and to offer a special award. In each of the high schools in La Cala de Mijas, a prize of 100 euros will be awarded to one student from each year who, in the opinion of the teachers, has made the greatest contribution to school life.
The mayor of Mijas, Juan Carlos Maldonado; the Councillor for Education, Hipólito Zapico; councillor Roy Pérez, coordinator Anette Skou and her assistant Katja Thirion from the Foreign Residents department, local head teachers and various media representatives attended the event.
