Alhambra Nievas named best referee in world rugby
Alhambra Nievas, born in Granada and settled in Malaga, has been named the best rugby referee at the World Rugby Awards. The achievement marks the second time she has been nominated for the award and means she makes history as the first female to receive the accolade.
Nievas will continue to break barriers this weekend as she will become the first female referee to officiate in a male test match when she takes charge of the international fixture between the United States and Tonga.
In addition to being a referee, Nievas is also a telecommunications engineer from the University of Malaga, where she first encountered the game of rugby.
